Tucking underwear helps create a smoother appearance in the pelvic area. Many people wear tucking garments because they prefer how their body looks and feels when tucked. Garden Variety Swim was created because founder and CEO Jessica Rose couldn't find both stylish and gender affirming swimwear for transgender bodies. Since this involves a sensitive area, it's important to understand how to tuck safely and comfortably.

What is Tucking?

Tucking positions the genitals to create a flatter appearance. There are two main methods:

Full tuck: Gently guide testicles into the inguinal canals and position the penis backward.
Semi-tuck: Position the penis backward without placing testicles into the canals.

Both methods can be done with tucking our tucking swimwear, with or without shaping tape.

What is Tucking Swimwear?

Tucking swimwear (also called gaffs or tucking swim underwear) uses firm elastic fabric to apply gentle compression, creating a smoother pelvic appearance. It works with either tucking method.

Who Can Wear Tucking Swimwear?

Anyone who prefers a flatter pelvic appearance—trans women, non-binary people, drag performers, femme-presenting people, or anyone who feels it suits their body or style.

How to Tuck

Without Tape:

  1. For full tuck: Gently guide testicles upward into inguinal canals (easiest lying down)

  2. For semi-tuck: Guide testicles backward instead

  3. Position penis backward between legs

  4. Pull on tucking underwear to hold everything in place

With Tape:

Only use skin-safe shaping tape designed for body use. Never use duct tape or household tape.

  1. Ensure area is hairless, clean, and dry

  2. Position testicles (full or semi-tuck)

  3. Guide penis backward

  4. Apply tape from front to back across pelvic area

Safety Guidelines

Don't Overdo It

  • Start with short periods (1 hour) and gradually increase

  • Don't tuck longer than 8 hours at a time

  • Stop immediately if you feel pain, numbness, or significant discomfort

  • Consult a medical professional if discomfort persists

Take Breaks

  • Take at least one day per week without tucking

  • Never sleep while tucked

  • Wear breathable, loose clothing during rest periods

Listen to Your Body

  • Switch to a semi-tuck if full tuck feels uncomfortable

  • Gently reposition if needed

  • Everyone's body is different—find what works for you

Possible Risks

Improper or prolonged tucking may cause:

  • Reduced circulation or pressure discomfort

  • Skin irritation or chafing

  • Moisture-related issues

  • Urinary discomfort

  • General soreness

If you experience persistent pain or concerning symptoms, stop tucking and consult a medical professional.

Tips for Comfortable Tucking

  • Give your body recovery time (max 8 hours/day, one day off per week)

  • Don't layer multiple tucking garments

  • Choose the correct size

  • Don't pull or force the genitals

  • Take a cool shower before tucking to make positioning easier

Sizing

Choose the same size as your regular underwear. Measure your waist and hips, then check the size chart.

Signs your size is too small:

  • Seams chafing or cutting skin

  • Uncomfortable restriction

  • Pain

If you notice these, size up. Don't size down hoping for flatter results—comfort and safety come first.

Elastic fabrics relax with wear and washing. Replace when support decreases.

Care Instructions

  • Wash in cold water after each use

  • Machine or hand wash with gentle soap

  • Air dry (heat affects elasticity)

  • Check product-specific care labels

Always prioritize comfort and safety. Individual experiences vary—listen to your body and choose what feels best for you.

Common Questions

Can I tuck with a larger penis?

Yes. Positioning may require adjustment, but tucking underwear can still work.

What if I get an erection while tucking?

It may feel uncomfortable due to restriction. If painful, stop tucking and allow your body to relax.

Can I exercise while tucking?

Many people can exercise with a lighter tuck but avoid very tight tucking during physical activity. Always listen to your body and stop or rest if you feel discomfort or pressure.

Is tucking safe for developing bodies?

Consult a medical professional if unsure. General safety rules still apply: max 8 hours, don't sleep tucked, check sizing carefully.
